How to use UMS Firmware Version 1.0c
UMS stands for "USB Mass Stroage". Devices that are configured as "UMS" devices will show on a computer as an external hard drive.
The advantage for the iFP player is it will no longer require iRiver Music Manager to load files onto the device.
To reconfigure your iFP player as a UMS device, you will need the UMS firmware found at the bottom of this page.
Please note, that if you update your iFP player to UMS, you will not be able to use iRiver Music Manager to transfer songs or files to or from the player.
- Perform a Firmware upgrade using the new UMS Firmware. Once the upgrade is complete, you can no longer use iRiver Music Manager as the Player has now become a Mass Storage Device and is now considered a hard drive. In order to convert Voice / Tuner (REC files), you would need to download the UMS Converter file. It is available within the Support page at www.iriveramerica.com
- Go to "My Computer" where you will see the Player as a Removable Drive (example is Removable Disk (F:) as shown below:
- Right click on the Drive, and choose to Format your Player (images below):
Please ensure that you choose to format (You cannot playback MP3 / WMA files if you use FAT32 or NTFS) your Player with the following options checked:
Please Note: "Volume Label" allows you to title your Drive for the iFP-Player. You may title your Player as you'd like, as well as re-name it by right clicking on the Drive after a title has been given to the Drive.
-
Click on Start to begin Formatting your Player. Once formatted, click on Close and disconnect your Player from the USB Cable. Re-connect your Player and go back in to My Computer and open the Drive for the Player. You will now see the following:
You can now send all files to and from the iFP-Player by simply transferring files from another location right into the iFP-Player's Drive. You can also transfer MP3 / WMA files from your iFP-Player to your PC. An example of MP3 files stored within the iFP-Player Drive is listed below.
In order to convert Voice / Tuner (REC) files, simply access the Voice or Tuner Folder from the Removable Disk drive, and drag or send it to a location on your PC. Once the file has been transferred onto your PC, right click on the file and you will see the option to have the file converted. Click on the option and the Voice / Tuner file will convert into a WAV or MP3 file. Please view example images below:
Important Notes:
1. For Windows 98 (SE) ONLY: You may safely disconnect the player from USB when the player LCD displays "USB Connected". If you disconnect the USB cable before the LCD displays "USB Connected", the data transfer may not completed and you may have incomplete files. Do not transfer files when the battery level is low. Use new batteries to avoid losing data.
2. In order to revert back to using iRiver Music Manager, simply download (if you do not have an old Firmware) non-UMS based Firmware from our Support site, and create the HEX file. Send the HEX file to the iFP-Player (as shown in the image below), and dis-connect your iFP-Player from the USB Cable.
Use your Navi / Menu button to get to the Main Menu and enter the General section. The following prompt will be shown:
Choose YES and the Player will revert back to the old Firmware. You will then be able to use iRiver Music Manager again.
