SlimX & ChromeX FAQ

What types of MP3 and WMA files are supported? The following types of MP3 and WMA files are supported by iMP series CD players

For MP3 files
Following are all of the sampling rate and bit rate combinations that are supported.
SAMPLE RATE :8,11.025,12,16,22.05,24,32,44.1 kHz
BIT RATE : 8,16,24,32,40,48,56,64,80,96,112,128,144,160,192,224,256,320 kbps
In addition to the above MP3 files, iMP-350 can play VBR(Variable Bit Rate) files.
*Note : There is no standard for VBR files; therefore, iMP350 cannot guarantee to play all VBR files.

For WMA files
The sampling rate and corresponding bit rate supported are shown in the following table.

Q. Is it normal for the CD to stop spinning occasionally during the course of playing a song?

A. Yes, it is not a defection. This is related to the skip protection and to elongate the battery life. When the CD stops, iMP-350 plays songs from the buffer memory not from the disc. This serves as a shock protection because the disc is not spinning at all.

Q. The player skips or goes to a reset, when I carry it in my pocket or bag.

A. 1. pre-buffering function for consecutive shock

iMP-350 provides up to 480 seconds of skip protection, because iMP-350 plays songs from buffer memory not directly from the disc. The performance of skip protection while playing a song depends on the amount of data remaining in buffer memory.

For example, if the data remaining in buffer memory is about 60 sec, the song does not skip even with consecutive shock for 50 ~ 55 seconds.

At the beginning of a song, usually the buffer memory is not enough to endure any shock; therefore, skipping will occur frequently when a song starts to play. However, after a song starts playing, the buffer memory will be enough to absorb the shock.

Usually anti-shock of 480 seconds is sufficient for people when they carry this player in their bags. However, you can adjust the anti-shock time for regular CD (30 seconds) and for ADPCM function (60 seconds) manually. But the sound quality will be reduced if you adjust this anti-shock time manually.

If your player still skips after adjusting the anti-shock time, please consult the technical support center.

2. due to the failure of MP3 or WMA files

Another reason for skipping can be the failure of MP3 or WMA files.

If there is some error on the file, you can hear skipping repeatly during playing a song. If this occurs, please check the file by playing the corresponding file on your PC. If the file has a problem, then remove it from the disc or create a new MP3/WMA disc without it.

3. due to the failure of recording

iMP-350 cannot read the data recorded on disc if the disc has scratches, fingerprint, or dust particles. In this case, iMP-350 will not function properly.

To improve the readibility of the disc,

(1). Keep the disc clean from scratches, fingerprints and dust particles.

(2). Use a good disc or recorder.

(3). Burn the disc slowly, use low speed recording instead of high speed recording.

4. due to static electricity and temperature

iMP-350 can skip or go to a reset due to static electricity. Electrostatic caused by dry weather and by the friction of clothing fabrics will affect the performance of the player.

The readibility of disc decreases as the temperature goes down. Operational temperature of iMP-350 is between 0 ~ 40 C. This player will not function properly below zero degree, because the performance of the pick-up mechanism and the battery drops significantly at zero degree.

Q. There is noise during playing of a song.

A. This may happen due to the failure of MP3/WMA files. If there is some error on the file, the player will skip repeatedly during playing a song. In this case, check the file by playing the corresponding file on your PC. If the file has a problem, then remove it from the disc or create a new MP3/WMA disc without it.

Q. There is a creaking sound when the CD spins.

A. It is normal for the CD to creak while spinning. iMP-350 loads and searches the song at high speed, that's why you will hear this creaking sound when the CD is spinning. The spinning speed can be reduced by firmware upgrade. But, the low spinning speed may result in lowering anti-shock performance and in shortening battery lifetime.

Q. "No Disk" or "Power On" error message appears when spinning up CDs.

A. To resolve the "No Disk" error message, try the following:

  1. Make sure the CD is mounted properly in the tray.
  2. Check the CD to see if it functions properly.
  3. Try to create a CD with standard MP3/WMA files encoded at 128, NOT VBR files.
  4. Note : The types of MP3/WMA files that are supported by iMP-350 is shown above.

  5. Try to burn your songs to another new disc (different brand). Different qualities of the discs may cause some malfunction.
  6. Try to burn a same CD from another CD recorder, and see if burning at a slower rate (say 4x or 2x) makes the files load properly.
  7. If you are using a Macintosh to record your CDs, make sure the .mp3 extension is attached at the end of each file. Some versions of Mac software do not include this extension, and these files cannot be read by iMP-350.
Check the firmware version number and make sure you have upgraded to the latest version. Make sure the adaptor is connected when you upgrade and that there are no other upgrade files on the disc you are using

Q. Why does it take longer to read CD-RW disc than regular CD?

A. The performance of the disc depends on many factors eg. the quality of the disc and the CD recorder. There are so many different types of CD/RW recorder and disc on the market, if the quality is not so good, the performance of iMP-350 will also be affected.

The performance of iMP-350 depends on the CD recorder and the recording software, as well as the environment eg. temperature, humidity, vibration and static electricity. No player can read all the existing CD-R, CD-RW perfectly. However, the player performance can be improved by firmware upgrade.

Q. Can the iMP series CD players support 8-cm CDs and CD-RW discs?

A. Yes, the iMP players can support 8-cm CD and CD-RW discs as well as a regular 12-cm 650M and 700M CD-R and CD-RW discs.

Q. Why do iMP series CD players give a "Protected WMA" message and skip the song?

A. Protected WMA is the file under DRM (Digital Rights Management). This is the program for the copyright of digital contents and for imposing a charge. DRM protects the copyrights and prevents the illegal copy or use of digital contents such as digital audio, digital video, graphics and programs events. Furthermore, it applies the usage rules according to the rights of users. Therefore, files under DRM cannot be played on the iMP series CD players.

*Note : The WMA files created by Windows Media Player have DRM, and these files cannot be played with iMP-350.

Q. Do the iMP series CD players support Ogg Vorbis and/or MP3Pro?

A. At this time, time iMP series CD players do not support Ogg Vorbis and/or MP3Pro. Our Research and Development team has these codecs under consideration to support in the future.

Q. Do the iMP series CD players have "gapless playback?" A. The iMP-350 has gapless playback for audio CDs with the release of firmware version 2.02. The iMP-350 currently does not support gapless playback for MP3 CDs. The iMP-150 ChromeX does not support gapless playback. The Research and Development team is aware of the “gapless playback” request for MP3 CDs, and is working to improve this feature in the future if technically possible. Q. Do the iMP series CD players support Chinese?

A. There are two types of iMP players. Type 1 does not support the Chinese language. In the U.S. and Canada, only Type 1 is sold. Type 2 supports the Chinese language, and Type 2 is sold from the Hong Kong office. If you are interested in purchasing the Type 2 iMP player, you can contact cs@iriver.com
